Kicked off the 2008 race season today with the WORS race down in Lake Geneva, WI. It's been over 5 months since I raced last and the first few hills off the start line were a brutal wake up to the legs as they instantly were on fire and my lungs felt like they were going to explode. By the end of lap one I could taste that nasty flavor of lung blood from expanding them more than they have been all year. It took about 30 minutes to get use to the effort and I started feeling better later the race.
I was able to bridge up the lead group of the Lalonde bros and Ben Moore after the climbs twice before finally falling off the pace somewhere during the second lap. I rode a majority of the race with Ben, he was pretty quick up the climbs and I had no snap at all, but I kept it steady and it looks that all my laps times were within 30 seconds of each other, but Ben crashed in the 4th lap and never made contact again so I was able to keep it going to finish and come in 3rd for the first race. I was really happy how the new GT Zaskar rode today, I had about 25psi in the rear tire and could feel it rolling a few times, but it worked good and the hardtail was the way to go out there. It felt really stiff on the climbs and when I get some more efforts in my legs I know that bike will be a climbing machine.
It was fun to be at the races again and see everyone again. Big thanks to
Planet Bike and
GT for everything this season - the bikes and support are great and standing on the podium after the first race was great motivation for the coming season
We even made it home in time to take a sweet walk and watch an awesome sunset over the farm fields.
